Import Tariffs for Electronics Have Been Raised

Decree 136/2023 was published in the Official Gazette on March 14, 2023, partially modifying Decree No. 117 of 2017, which had set a 0% import tariff for some electronics. This decision was taken following the Mercosur Common Market Council’s authorization, through Decision 8/21, authorizing Argentina to set a differential import tariff for electronics and telecommunications items.

Specifically, the decision rose import tariffs for the 8471.30.11 tariff position up to 16%. This tariff applies to electronics “under 350 grams, with an alphanumeric keyboard with at least 70 keys, and a screen under 140 cm2.”

On the other hand, the decision set an 8% import tariff for the 8471.30.12, 8471.30.19, and 8471.30.90 tariff positions. Respectively, these positions apply to electronics “under 3,5 kg, with an alphanumeric keyboard with at least 70 keys, and a screen under 560 cm2” and “the others”.

The decision came into immediate effect on March 15, 2023, with some exceptions. Among these is the case of on-its-way goods and already-arrived-into-customs goods, as long as clearance is obtained within sixty days since the decision came into effect.

The Decree highlights the importance of promoting the electronic industry, which would lead to a positive impact on specialized and highly paid jobs, a decreased dependance on imports, and a rise of the industry’s exports.
