New Preferential Tariffs between Argentina and Mexico to Expand Bilateral Trade.

Argentina and Mexico have signed two economic complementation agreements under the ALADI framework to reduce tariff barriers and boost trade between both countries. The first of these agreements was the bilateral treaty known as ECA 6 signed in 1993. The second is the agreement ECA 55 signed in 2002 between Mexico and Mercosur. These agreements have then been extended or renegotiated through Protocols.

Both parties signed Appendix I to the Seventh Additional Protocol of the Economic Complementation Agreement (ECA) 55, which includes:

  • A 3-year renewal -from March 19, 2022 to March 18, 2025- of the quota for the reciprocal import of light vehicles with 0% tariff.
  • Mexico grants Argentina an exclusive annual quota of 50,000 tons of beans, with 0% tariff and without the requirement of any prior import permit through 2022, 2023 and 2024.

At the same time, over the next three years, both countries committed to broaden and deepen ECA 6.

According to the briefing issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Argentina maintains a strong interest in the incorporation or renegotiation of preferential tariffs for wines, dairy products, poultry meat, garlic, vegetables, fresh fruit and fruit preparations, peanuts, chocolates, sunflower oil, steel and chemical products, among others.
